Marans

Black Copper Maran
The Black Copper Marans is one of the rarest breeds of chicken in the United States, that was just recently this year in March of 2011 admitted into the Standard of Perfection. It is a gorgeous breed laying one of the darkest brown eggs known. They are quite common in France where they originated from. The French standard calls for lightly feathered legs. There are only a hand-full of breeders here in the U.S. that have been able to produce Marans stock that comes close to the French standard. The most important goal of breeding this bird is the production of a gourmet dark brown egg. One of the founding Marans breeders in the US Bev Davis says on her website "that if the flock cannot produce #4 eggs at some time, they simply are not Marans, regardless of the breeding."  She also says "This is how the French begin by defining the breed.  They MUST produce a minimal egg pigment. The Marans here at Fowlrus lay those dark eggs."
*Last winter, we added Birchen Marans and black/blue Marans from Greenfire Farm to enhance our line.  The eggs from them are just as dark and should be a great addition to this breed.
Our beloved birds and their eggs had done well in competitions, numerous awards and trophys from Marans Chicken Club show, Comal County Fair, Fayette County Fair, South Central Texas poultry Show in La Grange TX and Fancy Feathers Show in New Braunfels TX.
